The Call of the Everyday Missionary: From Boardrooms to Backyards

By Scott Pierson, President, Zeal Mission Society

Every morning, people all over the world step into work that carries both weight and meaning. Some wear uniforms. Others wear aprons, hard hats, or simply the mantle of caring for a home. Whatever the setting, each of us wakes to a world that is broken, complex, and desperately in need of light.

At Zeal Mission Society, we see this truth come to life daily in Haiti — a place where following Jesus means living with open hands and steady courage. And the same God who moves through believers there is calling each of us, in every vocation, to live as missionaries in our ordinary surroundings.

Haiti: The Beauty of Faith in the Midst of Fire

Haiti is a land of fierce faith. It’s a nation that has endured political chaos, poverty, and disaster — yet, every Sunday, churches overflow with singing that shakes the walls. The Haitian believer doesn’t treat faith as an accessory; it’s oxygen.

In the streets of Cap-Haïtien, Zeal Mission Society trains men and women to weave the gospel into the fabric of daily work. It’s called Business as Mission (BAM) — building businesses that serve both the community and Christ. A baker who prays with her employees. A welder who disciples his apprentices. A vendor who tithes from the first coin she earns.

They’re not waiting for permission to start ministry. Their work is ministry.

The Gospel at Work in Every Calling

You don’t need to cross an ocean to live on mission.

Your job, your home, your routine — these are your mission fields.

If you manage people, you lead souls.

If you fix things, you restore glimpses of creation.

If you teach, you form minds that can see truth.

If you raise children, you’re discipling the next generation of image-bearers.

Scripture tells us, “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people”(Colossians 3:23). That means your spreadsheets, your lesson plans, your grocery runs, your prayers over dirty dishes — they all matter.

Work done unto the Lord becomes worship.

Risk Is Still Right

There’s a kind of faith that never makes headlines — the faith that takes quiet risks for the sake of obedience.

John Piper once wrote, “Risk is right. To run from it is to waste your life.” That truth echoes in Haiti, where believers start businesses in unstable economies and share the gospel in uncertain times. It also echoes in a mother who opens her home to neighbors despite fear of judgment, or a professional who risks reputation by living out integrity when compromise would be easier.

Every step of obedience that costs you something draws you nearer to the heart of Christ. Because the gospel doesn’t thrive in comfort — it thrives in surrender.

One Mission, Many Frontlines

Whether you’re on a construction site, in a classroom, running a household, or building a company — your work is not separate from the Kingdom. It’s sacred ground. The same God who sends missionaries into Haiti sends you into your neighborhood, your office, your kitchen, and your community.

We’re all called to build, to serve, to restore — and to do it in Jesus’ name.

At Zeal Mission Society, we’ve seen how business can become a bridge for the gospel. But that same principle applies everywhere: God’s people turning ordinary work into extraordinary worship.

So whatever you’re called to do today — do it with courage.

Love boldly.

Take risks for the Kingdom.

Let your work preach the gospel louder than your words.

The world doesn’t need more Christians chasing comfort. It needs more believers embracing purpose.

Because in every nation, every workplace, every home — Christ is worth it.
